"Amber exists to
young people whose lives are going nowhere; young people
who are long term-term unemployed, who may be homeless,
have a history of substance misuse, lack self-esteem or
been involved in crime. In a residential setting Amber
offers a fresh start; a chance to sort out problems,
build self-confidence, gain practical skills and
qualifications and generally acquire the know-how for
independent living and work.
Our approach is based on helping the individual as a whole, not on tackling specific issues only, so young people are able to find everything they need to turn their lives around, all in one place. By the time they leave us the vast majority are ready to lead sustainable independent lives.
Amber has two residential centres - Trowbridge in Wiltshire and Chawleigh in mid Devon. It also has a business enterprise in Melksham, Wiltshire that consists of house clearances, second hand sales room, reclamation yard and professional car valeting service."
Amber’s structured residential programme provides 24 hour support, career guidance, accredited training courses, challenging activities, environmental and community projects, counselling and work experience. All are designed to instil motivation, self-confidence and self esteem and help young people tackle any issues they may have, develop their interests, discover their strengths and learn how to work successfully with others. We have rural centres which distance young people from their previous environment thereby enabling them to rebuild their lives, and we have a graduation centre in a town that provides a wealth of job and training opportunities for the ‘Amberteers’ who have reached the point where they are ready to work. Most Amberteers stay with us for about six months but every young person’s needs is different so this time is flexible. This summer we will be opening an Amber business that will create valuable work experience and training for Amberteers whilst at the same time generating funds that can be used to help run Amber centres. We also maintain contact with Amberteers once they leave so that we can help with any problems they may encounter and give them any support and confidence they may need to keep to their new lifestyle.
